Credentials & Background

Education & Training

I earned my Ph.d in clinical psychology from Columbia University where I've been an Adjunct Professor for 20 years. In addition, I have a certificate in psychoanalysis from New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. I have also taught at St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital, Pace University Long Island University, and the National Institute for the Psychotherapies and have been an ongoing consultant to the Program in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University.

During and after college, prior to my intensive study and practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, I made paintings and sculptures. My background in the arts continuously informs and enriches my work, as the process of change – for both therapist and patient - always involves moments of uncertainty, discovery, playfulness, creativity and surprise.

Being a clinical psychologist has brought me the wonderful reward of seeing many patients grow emotionally into a more fulfilling life. This is the most gratifying part of my life as a professional.

My Basic Approach to Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis

I have over 25 years experience working with individuals (adults, adolescents, and children) and couples on a wide variety of emotional issues and life challenges. My goal is to help people overcome limitations and gain a greater feeling of authenticity as they create more fearless and expansive lives. I draw on a number of different treatment perspectives that are effective in working through troubling emotions and result in greater mental clarity.  These techniques pave the way for more choice in how you want to live. In particular, I use a psychoanalytic approach to address repetitive patterns and historical forces that can get in the way of creating the life people want to live. I pay careful attention to and collaboratively explore, the subtleties and intricacies of personal and interpersonal experiences as they unfold in the moment.  Over the years I have seen considerable benefit in focusing on what is felt within the therapeutic relationship as a valuable source of understanding inhibitions, limitations and discovering possibilities for change. This focus heightens the likelihood that the most significant emotional dilemmas will come to life in the present and be worked through, clearing the way to adopting new, empowering perspectives on yourself and others. When called for, I fold in behavioral, cognitive and Somatic Experiencing exercises and techniques to address specific problems and to help develop a sense of competency, control, and agency. But no matter what you bring into treatment to work on, I offer highly personalized care tailored to your needs and aspirations. The goal is to liberate you from unsatisfying or painful patterns in your personal life and to help you develop greater trust in yourself, stronger and more resilient relationships, build self-confidence and self-esteem, and ultimately broaden your capacity to live life more flexibly, creatively and meaningfully.

Psychotherapy is a process, and it is essential to the process that regularity and predictably of appointments, established collaboratively, are protected as much as possible. This includes our both making a commitment to start and end each session on time.

Please feel free to phone or email me with any questions or to schedule an individual, family or couples therapy appointment.  You may reach me through this website or by phone at 212-362-5071.  I look forward to getting to know you and working with you to make some changes and achieving your goals.
